More Illegal Pensions
Following on from the illegal pensions in Serbia are photos of similar pensions in Bosnia!! Before the international trade in dogs began, these places did not exist, now there are hundreds of them and they are all funded by donors and sponsors who believe they are helping. How many dogs are sent here then never heard of again? They die of parvo or distemper of neglect but not to worry, there is always another to take it's place.
How many "dog catchers" are paid to collect specific breeds of dogs, regardless of whether they are pets or street dogs as when taken to the pound, they are then sold to rescuers. This also provides an amazing photo opportunity for said rescuer as they are seen "saving" these dogs from a horrific city pound.
This week, two pieces of land where offered to UK donors, one already permitted and authorised, no rent payable just help with infrastructure. The other with everything in place and ready to be licensed as a shelter, rent 100 euro/month. The conditions would be that the dogs where spayed/neutered, looked after and rehomed locally. Offers of local homes had already been made but nobody was interested, why???
With a shelter rehoming locally and ran by genuine animal welfare workers, there would be no ability to skim money off for corrupt rescuers, vets and officials. For those in the UK, there would be no ego boost, no FB status updates showing photos of the dog THEY saved arriving in the UK. As one of the few genuine rescuers once told me, adoptions fuel funding. People won't donate if dogs aren't coming to the UK.
Personally, I find something deeply disturbing about so called animal lovers who will not help fund a better long term solution but instead, fund the suffering of these dogs in illegal pensions.

What happens if Brexit sees changes that disrupt the conveyor belt of illegal imports? Will you all just walk away and stop helping and contributing? Or will you stay the course and start working towards improving conditions and law enforcement in the countries of origin?
If the latter, why do you have to be forced to change? Why not see the bigger picture now and be the catalyst?
I tried with the offer of these two places and support from genuine welfare advocates and I'm not even involved in rescue!!! What is has proven to me though is that change is possible, the facilities, the laws and support is there but they need help from those able to vocally and financially contribute and sadly, for now, that help only appears to be available to those acting outside of the law.
