Dogs as Live Animal Imports

Image
When dogs are brought in as "rescues" from Europe, they are usually brought in on commercial import licenses and are classed as live animal imports. This involves using animal transport companies so, are all transports are equal and is it always in the best interests of the dog? These are questions I pondered over and in both instances, came to the conclusion that the answer is NO! Some transporters limit numbers to 35-40 dogs per van. Others cram in up to 50 dogs, think about that for a minute, 50 dogs and cages fitted into a transit van. I have been told by transporters that on runs where dogs are dropped off on route at owners homes, the journey can take 2-3 days as dogs are dropped off across Europe before entering the UK. Dogs going to the North of Scotland can sometimes spend a further day in the van. Consider also that some vans have no air con or heating and that temperatures can get as cold as -30 and as hot as 40+.  One volunteer told me of a van arriving with d...

Barnaby's Law

Image
Barnaby's Law was a call to the government to enact new legislation with regards to commercial dog imports. We originally wanted dogs to be titered for rabies immunity however, we have since discovered that these can be manipulated and the only way to guarantee dogs entering are disease free is to test dogs from at risk or non compliant (with current regulations) countries, on entry during a quarantine period. Previous request: Barnaby's Law is named after our rescue dog who was brought to the UK on falsified Romanian documents and failed a rabies titer test, he is now in quarantine. Dogs can be brought in  legally , we want to stop those cutting corners and bringing them in illegally so they make more money . Currently, an estimated 30,000-40,000 rescue dogs from the EU enter the UK each year as commercial imports. This has increased drastically since 2013 when the number was 1,869. The majority of these dogs are "rescue dogs" and come from  the Balkan countries ...

Hi everybody, I'm Barnaby

Hi everybody, I'm Barnaby. On the 10th of March 2018, I arrived on a van into the UK. I was driven North were a woman picked me up and took me to Litchfeild. I thought this was my new home but no, she wasn't going to keep me. She put me up for sale on a Facebook group. My "new mummy" saw me on there for sale and thought I looked very dapper and handsome and she came out to see me, fell in love with me and brought me home.  I wasn't looking my best when I arrived, my dew claw had been torn during my journey to the UK and my mum was worried about my castration wound as the stitches were too tight and the wound infected so she took me to the vets.  Just as I was settling into my new life, going for walks, trying to catch the otters in the lake and the water voles in the river, my mummy saw a thing called a tape worm. Apparently I shouldn't have had them as I was supposed to have been wormed before coming to the UK. The reason for this is a worm called  echin...
